Film still from the Kanban Grundkurs learning film series for plan-d akademie

Together with plan-d akademie, Geeta Chatterjee and Marc Oliver, we designed a digital course that explains the fundamentals of working with the Kanban system in practice, and its benefits, across 4 lessons — each with a long version (approx. 5 minutes) and a short, compact explanation (approx. 2 minutes) that revisits the key points of the respective lesson.

In cooperation with plan-d akademie, which has developed a learning platform of its own, the digital course system was adapted accordingly. Alongside the learning films there is additional written material and templates, so learners can get started themselves and deepen their knowledge.

Our Solution

For this production we chose a hybrid: a more rustic but stylish set with a stone wall in the background and a wooden desk in the foreground, combined with digital graphics both full-frame and as elements within the primary shot. The effect is the warmer, more welcoming visual setting of an office space in a historic industrial building — something many viewers find more pleasant over a longer stretch of time than a cool, plain studio. Since what is being presented is not so much technical detail as a model for personal development, we address the audience directly through the seated position (our experts should feel as approachable and accessible as possible despite the distance created by the medium) and through the set itself.

The Challenge

The goal of the entire project was to create a vivid and motivating digital learning course in which people speak to people — not just simple animations. Part of the challenge was, not unusually, the time available. Because the whole team first had to find its rhythm in a constellation like this, and because our protagonists had previously focused on content delivered live and on site, speaking to a camera and an »imaginary« audience had to be practised — which proved possible in next to no time and worked very well across the two full shooting days. On top of that, the entire project was produced under difficult climatic conditions: two extremely warm midsummer days, in a location whose air conditioning had a problem of its own. After two (rather sweaty) days the entire course was in the can and could move on to post-production.

The Result

The result is an introductory learning film series on Kanban, engaging both visually and in the way it is told, with a total running time (film without working material) of 25 minutes. It gives clients and viewers a compact, solid overview they can build on.
