Employer branding

The work of becoming recognisable as an employer. In moving image that does not mean presenting yourself as better than you are, but more clearly. So the right people apply and the wrong ones do not.

What matters in practice

Employer branding is one of those terms a briefing rarely interrogates. In practice that produces interchangeable films: a drone pass over the yard, smiling people in the canteen, a line about team spirit. Films like that generate applications from people who have learned nothing about the work. Applicants like that leave during probation more often than average.

The most effective employer branding film does the opposite: it filters. It shows what a working day actually looks like: including the six o’clock start, the winter spent outdoors, the site that changes every few months. Anyone who applies afterwards knows what they are getting into.

What works in films like these

  • The people doing the work speak for themselves. Not the managing director on workplace culture, but the second-year apprentice on what surprised them.
  • One concrete thing instead of a list of benefits. Four standard perks every competitor also offers do not differentiate. A single peculiarity that exists only at your company does.
  • Honesty about the hard parts. It costs a few applications and saves several bad hires.

Why this matters particularly in construction

Architecture and engineering practices compete for young talent with large corporates, public authorities and industry. Their advantage rarely lies in the salary; it lies in the projects and in how the office actually works. That is exactly what can be filmed and cannot be described in a job advert. Here a film is less advertising than translation.
